Mitsinjo Forest Reserve, Andasibe, Madagascar.
I have not only been interested in the Amphibia side of the Herptile industry, but also with the Reptilia side to (However my true passion lies with the Amphibians!) and in the area of Andasibe, I knew I would find many species of Reptile. There are numerous reserves and national parks to visit and in this small area alone, which contains approximately 39 species or more, within the class of Reptilia. From Snake species to Chameleons, Andasibe will definitely not fail to disappoint the passionate Herpetologist especially when it comes to one particular genus of Gecko.
Also know in the common tongue as "Leaf-tailed Geckos", the Uroplatus (Derived the the Greek words "Uro" meaning "Tail" and "Platus" meaning "Flat") genus is highly variable, unbelievably beautiful and completely intriguing to say the least.
Tonight, I set out with my friend and fantastic guide Justin Claude (You will know him from working with Sir David Attenborough and also Martin Clunes in the past) into the forest, with no particular aims or animals in mind to find.
After an hour and fifteen minutes, we came across to species in a single go, one Calumma gastrotaenia chameleon and also a beautiful adult specimen of the Mossy Leaf-tailed Gecko (Uroplatus sikorae). It was unbelievable and after a short while of photographing it, I placed my hand near it and it jumped on and immediately started to try and blend in flattening itself out against my hand.
Unbelievable experience...
Kind regards,
Joshua Ralph
